Description

A 2-day, 1-night trek into the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world: descend to the town of San Juan de Chuccho, hike to the Sangalle Oasis to spend the night by the pool, and climb back up to Cabanaconde.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1: pickup between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. and a 3-hour drive to Chivay, with a stop for breakfast.
  2. Continue on to Cruz del Condor: 45 minutes to observe the condor flight over the deepest canyon in the world.
  3. Arrival in the town of Cabanaconde (3,287 masl) and start of the descent on foot through the canyon (approx. 3 hours, zigzagging) to San Juan de Chuccho (2,200 masl), where you have lunch.
  4. Afternoon hike to the Sangalle Oasis (1,900 masl), passing through the towns of Cosñirhua and Malata; overnight in private rooms by the pool.
  5. Day 2: ascent back to Cabanaconde (5:00 a.m., approx. 3 hours) and breakfast.
  6. Return to Chivay with stops at the Antahuilque viewpoint (pre-Inca terraces) and the town of Maca (colonial church, handicrafts, and sancayo sour drink); optional dip in the hot springs beneath the Inca Bridge, in Yanque.
  7. Lunch in Chivay and return to Arequipa, with stops at the volcano viewpoint (Sabancaya, Hualca Hualca, Ampato, Misti, and Chachani) and at the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve; arrival around 5:00 p.m.

Departure schedule

Pickup between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. on day 1; return to Arequipa around 5:00 p.m. on day 2.

Difficulty note

Trek with an approx. 3-hour descent on day 1 and an approx. 3-hour ascent on day 2, zigzagging through the canyon.

Additional info

Arrival point two blocks from the main square in Arequipa. It is recommended to bring cash, as card payments are not possible during the tour.
